Capitol Conference Feb 4-6, 2008

CAHU Membership we have a strong group heading to DC in February to represent our Charlotte Chapter.  Watts Huckabee, Chad Blankenburg, Trisha Norket, Denise Hopper, Bob Frazer, Brook Seaford, Patrick Gray, Jason Chandler, and Barney Spurlock will be the Charlotte based members headed to Capitol Hill to lobby for our chapter and NAHU in February.  We each look forward to sitting down with out elected officials to let them know what NAHU and CAHU see in the health care industry and the various effects that legislation has on our business.

If you have any points of interest that you would like us to carry to DC and bring to our elected officials attention please let us know.  We send a select group of folks to DC each year, but we represent our overall membership while there, please let us know what items you want heard!

Single-Payer Health Plan Materials

After Nat Smith’s great presentation of the NAHU Single-Payer Three Myth’s Presentation, many of you have asked where you obtain a copy of the Presentation and/or other documentation that explains the “myths” and insides of these proposed systems.  All this information is available to our membership via NAHU’s website;

SCHIP Update

On September 25th the House passed HR 976, the SCHIP Reauthorization.  This legislation was similar to the one passed by the Senate earlier this session and in this run of the bill it did include the NAHU supported premium assistance points.  This bill will be vetoed by President Bush, while the House will sustain this veto.

At that point it will be approved for short-term funding and back to the reforming of the bill we go in both the House and the Senate.  NAHU does vie to continue to show support for the premium assistance points and all points of responsible funding of this bill.

State L&L

We are excited about the upcoming CAHU Health Forum, which will take place on January 9, 2007.  The topic of the forum will remain, "The State of Healthcare Today" and will feature panelists from each aspect of the healthcare spectrum:  provider, broker/consultant, carrier, and pharmaceutical.  This year's forum will be moderated by David Smith, President-Elect of NCAHU.  Once the panelists are confirmed, we will notify the membership.

Also, we continue to encourage members to participate in the "Adopt-A-Legislator".  So for those of you who might have a relationship with a legislator, please notify Porter Hicks, State L&L Chair.  For those who might not have a relationship with a legislator, but wish to begin one, please contact Porter Hicks as well to obtain a list of available legislators.

L&L is at the core of our activity as an association, so let's get everyone involved a make a difference in our industry!

Major Federal Health Care Reform Proposals Released

Earlier this month the entire membership should have received an email from NAHU which outlined the proposals by various members of the governing body, as well as, President Bush in regards to the proposals for Federal Health Care Reform.

These proposals touched on various things across the board in the healthcare arena; from President Bush’s tax deductions for families and individuals, to NC State Senator Burr’s look at refundable advanceable tax credits for families and individuals.  The overall goal still being greater access to affordable premiums in a continued private market place.
