Greetings from
Your CAHU President
|
|
Thanks
to all of you who came out for the September meeting. Our speaker was
Wayne Goodwin, our State Insurance Commissioner. He announced several
things to us as breaking news. One of which was that he had just sent
in a waiver request to HHS for the MLR. He answered all questions and
even stayed after the meeting to speak with members individually. It
was a terrific kick off meeting for our new fiscal year. Here are a
few things CAHU is doing;
I want to repeat my
request that each of you bring just one non-member to next
month's meeting and encourage them to join. If all of us
sponsored one new member this year, we would be the largest
chapter in North Carolin, by far. Membership is very important to the
health of our industry. The fall membership contest is in full swing!
Our
chapter is working hard for you. Nat Smith, Geoffrey Duke and I
attended a function with Sue Myrick on the 19th. We were
able to speak with her and pursued her to sign on as a co-sponsor to
H.R. 1206 which is the bill in the house that would take commissions
out of the MLR equation. This is something that NAHU is pushing hard
on in our behalf.
We
are selling raffle tickets to benefit the North Carolina Health
Underwriters state chapter. Specifically ,the proceeds will go to help support
the administrative costs for the state organization. Remember, this
is the group that runs the NCHU symposium every year. This is a
chance to win a $4,000 vacation cruise for $10!. Please
consider buying a stack of these for your clients or your staff.
The
October 5th meeting will feature North Carolina's
own and NAHU National President, Mel Schlesinger who will
speak on the state of NAHU and how to increase your business in this
tough economy. Please don't forget to RSVP and make plans to attend!
We
meet on the first Wednesday of every month, so plan to join us!
Oh, and bring your friends from the office. Did I mention that
we have a contest for those that bring in new members?
Bruce
Frizen, President

The
health care reform news changes daily, sometimes hourly, it
seems. Here are some recent events that you may be
interested to know:
- Rep.
Sue Myrick recently signed on as a co-sponsor of HR 1206 in
support of insurance agents and the attempt to reverse any
portion of the PPACA.
- The President's job
bill affects several health care related topics including:
- Shifting more health
care costs to seniors covered by Medicare through higher
premiums and deductibles
- Reducing the growth of
Medicaid payments made to the states
- The possible exclusion
of the deductible nature of HSA accounts just as they announce
more employers are offering them
- The possible exclusion
of the deductible nature of employer sponsored health plans
altogether
- A federal district
judge in PA ruled the individual mandate was unconstitutional on
September 1, and an appeal is likely to be filed in the US
Appeals court in Philadelphia by the administration.
- The 4th
Circuit Court of Appeals in VA threw out two cases in VA, one
submitted by the state and a second by Liberty University on
technical grounds. Both cases are likely to eventually
head to the Supreme Court.
- Waivers under the PPACA
are being requested, approved and denied all over the country in
all sorts of different ways. Good luck on keeping track of
them.
As
we head to the elections of 2012 and as different court cases get
appealed and moved towards the Supreme Court, the rhetoric will get
louder. Let's make sure we do our part as insurance
professionals to voice our opinions to our representatives and appointed
officials at both the federal and state levels. We can make a
difference with both our individual efforts and group actions.
Please consider making a HUPAC contribution so that they can continue
to lobby on our behalf and make your voice heard as an individual.

Scholarships
to CapCon
|
|
Thanks to a generous
grant from Colonial Life, YAHU is able to offer
scholarships to cover the Capitol Conference registration fee.
Scholarship recipients are responsible for their own hotel and
travel.
The scholarships are
for young agents, those agents relatively new to the industry and
under the age of 40. This is designed to get those agents involved
with the association on a national level and allow them to really
experience the benefits of being a member of NAHU.
Capitol Conference is
a very powerful learning experience and can give you a jump-start to
be more active in our association and industry.
Scholarship applications are available on the NAHU website (www.nahu.org). Applications are due by
November 1st!

Leading
Producers Roundtable
|

Each year our association recognizes those industry
professionals who have excelled over and beyond their sales
achievements during the year. In 1942 NAHU started the LPRT group to
recognize those who have succeeded within our membership and within
our industry. The application deadline to become part of the LPRT for
2011 is fast approaching. Please see the link that follows for more
information on the Leading Producers Round Table!
